Many picture framers develop their skills and learn framing methods under the supervision of an experienced mentor, but often without the benefit of organized training or education specific to framing. There are no requirements for education, training, experience, or competence in the framing industry. Literally anyone can claim to be a professional picture framer, so there are many variables in the qualifications of framing practitioners. Some seek to impress customers by claiming false credentials, so buyer beware. Picture framers who have invested the considerable time and money to assemble a reference library, study, attend seminars, and earn legitimate credentials usually display their certificates, or are pleased to provide the proof of their accomplishments upon request.
The mass-marketers in retail framing provide their employees a fundamental training program that meets the companies' minimum standards, and then deem them to be “certified”. These basic training programs generally are developed and administered within the company. Advanced framing techniques and peer-reviewed qualifications may not be involved, but the mass-market companies’ framing employees can take it upon themselves to seek additional training and education in order to better serve their customers.
Worldwide, there are three legitimate, peer-reviewed qualification programs developed by the consensus of professional picture framers:
Guild Commended Framer (GCF) sponsored and administered by the Fine Art Trade Guild of London, England. Most popular in the UK and Europe, this program begins with the GCF designation, a test of basic framing skills, and continues with optional, advanced qualifications for textile framing, mat design and function, and conservation framing.
Certified Picture Framer (CPF) sponsored and administered by the Professional Picture Framers Association, a unit of Photo Marketing Association International (PMAI) of Jackson, Michigan. The CPF designation is popular among independent framing practitioners in North America and Australia. The program requires framing experience and provides the most comprehensive self-directed study guide in the industry, as preparation for the three-hour written exam. Recertification is required periodically in order to maintain certification.
Master Certified Picture Framer (MCPF) sponsored by the Professional Picture Framers Association. This is the highest level of qualification available to framers. The exam involves design and construction of preservation framing for artworks on paper and canvas, textiles, and three dimensional objects. Continuing education courses are required periodically in order to maintain certification.
